Publisher's summary

Brent Weyland was the life of the party until an injury ended his hockey career. Now he's retreated alone to a lakefront house, trying to make sense of a life and body that doesn't feel like his anymore.

Jon Norquist was happily married right up until he wasn't. Now a single father in his 40s, he's trying to figure out what comes next. In the meantime, he pours his heartache and regret into the lyrics he sings for the wine bar crowd a couple of nights a week.

When a friend coaxes Brent out for a night of wine and music, he puts Brent and Jon on a collision course. Their chemistry is instantaneous. Jon gives Brent's battered body a much-needed remedial lesson in pleasure. And Brent gives Jon a reason to smile again.

Multiple reasons, actually. Neither man wants anything serious, but love has a habit of showing up whether it's welcome or not. No matter how hard they try, the two can't help having feelings for each other, even as life continues to throw them curveballs.

But they've both got baggage to unpack and hurt to move past, and if they can't leave their pasts in the past, they might just miss out on an amazing future.

Contains mature themes.

Melancholy

Very real life and melancholy through the entire book. I almost stopped listening a few times but got through it. Sweet characters but a bit too depressing for me.

Enjoyable

I loved the story line and the characters and a double bonus two of my favorite narrators. Will say even though I enjoyed the story it was still a little sad in parts.

Not the same old same old - and I freakin' love it

L.A. Witt is an author with depth and intention. I went into this book after listening to two other books in the series- with expectations of similarity. I should have realized my error. The characters are both living in the aftermath of something devastating to their lives. And for Brent there is an aspect that I've never seen covered in m/m romance and I am HERE FOR IT. I wont get into it and spoil the book but I will say that Lori , as always .. doesn't disappoint . Be aware this is not a fabulous light hearted romp though the sex life of two people - but I cannot recommend it enough! Its amazing !

welll..... there's one thing that I didn't love. The narrator for Jon was way too breathy and "sighy" and frankly I felt like he made the character sound whiny .. about 50% in I downloaded the book on KU and read his chapters .

So good and so real!

One of the best romance novels I've read in a long time, and I read a lot of them. The characters are real, human and heartbreakingly relatable. They are dealing with life-altering changes and insecurities, none of which have magical solutions. Even the ex-wife is a three-dimensional human being. The narration is superb too. The hotel scene was a little high anxiety, but so worth getting to the other side.

Not quite finished

I’m trying my best to get through this one. The premise is great. The handling of the medical and mental concerns is good but the story drags a little. The MC’s stay focused on the supposed “friends with benefits” situation far too long after it was clear they were more. The eventual “I’ll end it before he does” right after their confession of wanting more seemed out of place in their story. It just didn’t seem like something either character would inherently do. I genuinely tried to get past the issues with narration but after 29 chapters I cannot just set the issues aside and keep going. I’m invested in the characters now so I want to finish the book. The narration for Jon is hard to get through. The stilted cadence of his voice alternating with rushed, pressured speech and overly soft and breathy tones is difficult to listen to. Add too much inflection where it is unnecessary and the above issues all work together to render the voice unrealistic and therefore irritating. I’m sorry for all the negative feedback but I really wanted to enjoy this book and it has become difficult to do so. I may resort to reading Jon’s parts as others have suggested.

A little long-winded

First thing, I love the narrators on this book. Their styles worked well together and the characters were consistent through the changing POV’s. The story was a little repetitive… “I’m not good enough for him” over and over. The story was good with interesting nuances, esp. about pain management. But at least two chapters of angst near the end could have been omitted.

Unique and sweet

I liked how unique this story was, and it was more sexy than those where everything is a typical trope. It got a little bit repetitive toward the end about rehashing insecurities, but definitely an enjoyable read.

A little too drawn-out but very good

The “we’re just friends with benefits” conceit was a bit too to drawn-out for my taste – I was like “come on, guys! Admit you love each other, already!” Nevertheless, I loved the storyline about the one character’s divorce and the other character’s injuries and how they were both recovering from them and finding it easier to recover with each other.

Great Character Development

This was so good. Both narrators nailed it! LA Witt really knows how to develop a character so that you’re really in their head. I hurt when they hurt. I laughed when they laughed. Just a really good storyline with emotions all over the place.
