Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Story
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Story
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce—and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So: we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding. Earth itself is a backwater.

AD 2150: Chris Randall just lost his job as a bodyguard. That night, after picking up his wife, Bree, from her shift at a local casino, he breaks the bad news. Moments later, thunder cracks the sky, but there’s no lightning. Flaming debris rain across the valley, and a dark mass goes sailing out of the clouds, headed straight for LA. It’s not one of the Union’s starships, because they can’t defy gravity like that. But then, what is it? The answer chills both Chris and Bree to their cores: It’s an invasion.

Story
My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet. I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why? I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know.

good but not as great as "3 body problem" series
perhaps it's the difference style of writing and the high expectations listening to the book after finishing the trilogy, still interesting but not as immersive and definitely doesn't need to be considered as a prequel

Alright
The book was alright, but I read three body first and found that one much more interesting. The theoretical ideas in this book are interesting but the way the characters learns of the ideas didn't seem realistic enough to me. The odd physics genius stereotype just always had an explanation for every weird, unnatural phenomena they experienced.
also, the storytelling wasn't as compelling to me as three body problem.

Emensely Enjoyable
The verisimilitude of this world made listening a vivid experience. The narration was talented and colourful; greater emphasis on chapter breaks would have made my binge-listening more . . . comfortable?

Distinctly Clarkian, but a bit worrying
I like the book. There are two major sources of inspirations for the plot: Arthur Clarke's novels and Chinese fiction on breathtaking discoveries. Clarke is a genre master for me, so I could not enjoy the novel. Highly recommended.
Now what worries me: if the book is in any way reflection of the sentiments of the Chinese society, the Western world should really start rearming. While it's not a main theme of the novel, militaristic and nationalist attitudes aimed against the sinister America are clearly accented. The Chinese army is a positive protagonist, the West is obsessed with arms development and when the war erupts (it just erupts somehow, no casus belli explained) the Chinese are worried about the invasion against the mainland China (what is absurd given the available manpower). It's as an alien attitude for the West, as any extraterrestrial.

Continues to be one of my favourite authors!
The book starts off absolutely brilliantly and you are hooked in immediately. It is a different feel and pace to Three Body Problem series, but I enjoyed the infiltration of science (however unnatural) into the near future. Narrator was brilliant.

Not hard sci fi
Quite different from 3BP, a lot softer and more fanciful
Story was a bit all over the place for my taste
