Publisher's summary
Humanity has finally made its way into the stars.
As the grand expansion begins, habitable planets need to be found. Captain Gabriel "Ruck" Rucker, after his service in the Defense Forces, finds himself searching the rim of known space for worlds that can be used by mankind. Whether by mega corporations for resources or extremist groups looking for a utopian new start, the contracts all pay. With their one-of-a-kind ship, the crew pushes out past the rim worlds looking for a huge payday. What they find could irreparably alter the course of human development.
Follow Ruck and his crew as they navigate the complexities of the Exploration Guild and the emptiness of unknown space. Both situations are equally dangerous in their own ways.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

But something went wrong. Once again, I must fight. The Monsters that face me here are far more terrifying than those of my past life. They are cleverer, crueler, more unpredictable. And their name is.

The year is 2650. Seventy-five years ago, an alien fleet attacked Earth. Without warning. Without mercy. We were not prepared. Hundreds of millions perished. Dozens of cities burned. Chase had it all planned out. Do a little time in one of the emperor's jails, say a four-year stretch, for getting rid of some trash that no one would miss, and when he got out, the path to leadership would be wide open. Unfortunately, his bastard of a father, the same one who left his mother to die in poverty and him to run wild on the streets, took an interest. Seeing him sitting on the bench when his case went to court was a shock. But not as big a shock as being sentenced to ten years in the Imperial Navy.

Space exploration, BadAssery and adventure
Absolutely great book/listen!
Mix up space exploration, discoveries, adventure with a few shootouts and the development of a bunch of great and interesting characters and mysterious first contact and you have this story. Add the smallest and descreate tease of a past series/universe (possibly missed totally if I hadn't just read several of the series) makes this a refreshing change to the mil SciFi and space opera genre. Touches of the litRPG style of the authors writing style is no to much or 'in your face's but it's lucky as I love it AND the whole space explorer / new frontiers feel.
This book is focused on how the crew get to be join the explorers guild, repair the ship, fit it out and start new careers as explorers, it's full of humour and also veteran and ex military ethos/conduct with associated one liners those that have served will relate to - but not too much
Highly recommended to join the adventures of a crew, there ship and wide eyed exploration of the unknown parts of the galaxy.
Can't wait to next book in series!!!
