Publisher's summary

Guy Mayfield was the Station Chaplain at RAF Duxford during the Battle of Britain. His diary is a moving account of the war fought by the young pilots during that summer of 1940, providing a unique and intimate insight into one of the most pivotal moments in British history.

Mayfield frequently spoke to pilots who knew they may not survive the next 24 hours, and his diary provides a vivid account of the fears and hopes of the young men who risked their lives daily for the defence of Britain.

IWM historian Carl Warner brings a compelling and direct new perspective to this historic battle.

Painful, Heartfelt Journal

Guy Mayfield was an RAF chaplain. And this is his collection of journal entries from 1940-1941. He details the losses, confusion, and overall heroism of the RAF during the Battle of Britain. But what he also happens upon is the human toll continual death takes on men. When one expects that with each run death is imminent, it weights heavily upon all involved. But in order to cope, one has to have a bit of dissociation. And Guy had that. He had certain men who were his dear friends that perished and it weighted heavily on him. What a wonderful breath of painful reality.
