Publisher's summary

From the international best-selling author of Unraveling Oliver, an “unputdownable psychological thriller with an ending that lingers long after turning the final page” (The Irish Times) about a Dublin family whose dark secrets and twisted relationships are suddenly revealed.

My husband did not mean to kill Annie Doyle, but the lying tramp deserved it.

On the surface, Lydia Fitzsimons has the perfect life - wife of a respected, successful judge, mother to a beloved son, mistress of a beautiful house in Dublin. That beautiful house, however, holds a secret. And when Lydia’s son, Laurence, discovers its secret, wheels are set in motion that lead to an increasingly claustrophobic and devastatingly dark climax.

For fans of Ruth Ware and Gillian Flynn, this novel is a “seductively sinister story. The twists come together in a superbly scary denouncement, which delivers a final sting in the tail. Brilliantly macabre” (Sunday Mirror).

Gripping and unforgettable

Oh man. This story was so good, it hurt. I couldn't stop listening, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Warning though - it is dark, very dark, and some will have an issue with the ending.

Excellent performance..... decent story...

This book was very well developed, the characters were on point! BUT it was just too long at some points of the story, and a little dull. Liz Nugent did bring everything together and it was quite disturbing, but I wasn't overly impressed.

Creepy!

This is the story of Laurence and his mother Lydia. The narration was pretty engaging with the exception of the narrator who portrayed Karen. She was read so morosely that I found it a bit distracting and annoying. I found the rest of the book as a riveting character study of a true narcissistic sociopath with a disturbing and not completely satisfying ending.

To be fair

To be fair I haven’t finished it and most likely won’t but it’s kind of boring and I haven’t really enjoyed any part of any of the three storylines. I’d save your credit if it’s precious to you

One of the best audiobooks I've ever heard.

This is me reading the first chapter: Omg. O.m.g. OMG! Then the story develops like the Matterhorn ride at Disneyland, pulled uphill in the dark and come whirling down again screaming OMG! It's a psychological thriller with gothic elements. The three actors who narrate it are engaging and talented and bring this otherwise insanely well-written book to life. It should be a movie. A really good movie. And I hope everyone buys all Liz Nugent's books and she keeps writing for years and years.

Just finished and I am creeped out!

Sort of reminds me of an Alfred Hitchcock ending. Story kept me listening and narration is good.

EXEMPLARY!!!!!

This book is in the top five of the hundreds of books I've listened to on audible. There isn't a wasted word. I'm now a fan of Liz Nugent and I marvel at her ability to draw you in to her devastating imaginary world.

I liked it, not loved it.

I liked it, not loved it.

I thought from the beginning I would LOVE it but, it kind of lost it for me for a while and picked up towards the end for a bit. It just never seemed to grab me. Not even at the end. Having said that, I will definitely give this author another try.

Wow “Mommy Dearest” on steroids!

I love how each chapter starts off in the 3rd person. Each character has their own story to tell and it makes the story all come together. The emotional blackmail, lies and deceit and how controlling one person can be is twisted.

The end was not what I wanted it to be...

It wasn’t bad the story kept moving along the last 20 minutes 15-20 years probably went by.. I guess you can’t always get the endings you want and think would be most satisfying so I’ll have to just accept the conclusion as is. But there certainly are pathological liars out there who tell themselves whatever they need to make the crazy seem normal. Sorry for the poor review but I don’t want to give things away.
