The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives. Including their gruesome deaths. Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Story
Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate. Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Empowered by the "System", he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication.

Publisher's summary
A fugitive child finds shelter with a monster of legend.
A mind-blind scholar outwits the mages who disdain him. A gold mage must secure a bank vault from a monster capable of obliterating entire cities. An aging basketweaver wakes up one morning to find a brand new river in front of her house. A palace-sized octopus seeks to defend his city from a living fortress of bone—if he can get his arms to cooperate.
In these twenty-four short stories set in the world of Mage Errant, John Bierce explores the murky depths of history, forgotten corners of Ithos and beyond, and the strangest reaches of magic itself.

Story
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Time marches on, life continues, the world spins, the uncaring Universe never noticed when one little dot stopped moving, nor one young girl got older, one family was wounded, or one confused and struggling alien tried to make sense of everything going on around him. I wish I could say all of my time on Earth was easy, a joyful time filled with light and games and happiness. But the reason all of those times where life was marvelous shone so brightly is precisely because there was shadow too. Some darker than others, I admit. Enjoyable
In my opinion, I find that anthology books are something that listeners will like two or four of the stories and see the rest as somewhat disappointing. However, I believe readers will appreciate every story written in this book, and I hope people will purchase it because they won’t be disappointed.

Good but not what I expected
I honestly still don't know what the Gorgon Incident is. Well I did enjoy all the short stories and learning more about his world and various new characters. I was more hoping for a whole book about the Gorgon Incident with Alustion as the main character or at least a good three to four hours. Instead we got a redacted file report. Still worth listening to just not what I expected or was hoping for.

This series of short stories is an excellent addition to Anastis and the other worlds in the Mage Errant series. Answers a bunch of minor questions raised in the series and creates a few more. I cannot wait for more in this universe!

World building at its finest…
I always enjoyed John Bierce’s Mage Errant Series. I was unaware of his background in real life. This makes me appreciate his attention to detail that much more. Would happily recommend this book (and his others) to anyone interested in good fantasy, world building, and character development.
