Publisher's summary

“Dark, twisty and full of characters you’ll love to hate, The Nanny is the perfect read for a chilly winter’s night.” (Ruth Ware, New York Times best-selling author)

The Nanny kept me in white-knuckled suspense until the very last page. Gilly Macmillan’s breakout thriller is a dark and twisted version of Downton Abbey gone very, very wrong.” (Tess Gerritsen, New York Times best-selling author)

The New York Times best-selling author of What She Knew conjures a dark and unpredictable tale of family secrets that explores the lengths people will go to hurt one another.

When her beloved nanny, Hannah, left without a trace in the summer of 1988, seven-year-old Jocelyn Holt was devastated. Haunted by the loss, Jo grew up bitter and distant, and eventually left her parents and Lake Hall, their faded aristocratic home, behind.

Thirty years later, Jo returns to the house and is forced to confront her troubled relationship with her mother. But when human remains are accidentally uncovered in a lake on the estate, Jo begins to question everything she thought she knew.

Then an unexpected visitor knocks on the door and Jo’s world is destroyed again. Desperate to piece together the gaping holes in her memory, Jo must uncover who her nanny really was, why she left, and if she can trust her own mother....

In this compulsively listenable tale of secrets, lies, and deception, Gilly Macmillan explores the darkest impulses and desires of the human heart. Diabolically clever, The Nanny reminds us that sometimes the truth hurts so much you’d rather hear the lie.

You should listen!

After reading other reviews that the ending was abrupt and the characters annoying, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy this as much as I did. It is a wonderful story and a great listen. I enjoyed the narrators, they did a fantastic job portraying the characters. I don’t understand how anyone could think the ending was abrupt, there were many things leading up to the way it ended. I hate it when endings are dragged out, long after the climax of the story. Highly recommend for a good listen!

Good performance worth the listen

I enjoyed the character build for all of the individuals. The ending was predictable early on however I enjoyed the development of the individuals throughout the story. it's like Downton Abbey's mystery theater.

Pretty good book

Pretty cool book. Performance was good. Story was good. Could’ve been a little more intense with the things going on but it had me captured. Just wasn’t in an edge of your seat kinda way. Good overall tho!

Meh, just ok.

Storyline was contrived, characters were not well developed. Narration was not very good, especially the child's voice. Ending didn't answer my questions.

Really Loved This Book!!!

I have to say I truly enjoyed this book. When I was looking for something else to listened to and I came across this book; the sample immediately gave me a thirst for more. I was dying to know who Hannah was and what happened to her. I also loved the characters and the different narrators. Gilly Macmillan is an excellent author. And I can’t wait to see what see what other novels she has.

If you like mysteries about high society rich families and their nannies. This book is for you! I strongly encourage everyone who loves audible to check this book out.

Kept me guessing

I disliked so much back and forth of time periods, but understood how it played into telling the story. I liked the ending.

Good book. Steady pace not predictable

Great narration. Good book. Kept my interest not sure why it was in two parts though.
Only issue was the last dents of the book. I might have missed something because it didn’t seem to make sense
Overall it was good
