REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK

“Our June Reese’s Book Club pick is the perfect summer listen!!! The Unwedding by Ally Condie opens with a wedding at a gorgeous resort in Big Sur... but everything begins to fall apart when the main character Ellery discovers a dead body the morning of the ceremony.”–Reese Witherspoon

The White Lotus meets Agatha Christie in this bold novel from a #1 New York Times bestselling author: a recent divorcee's exclusive Big Sur resort vacation unravels when she discovers a dead body on the day of a wedding, in this “clever, witty and fast-paced whodunit.” (Harlan Coben)

Ellery Wainwright is alone at the edge of the world.

She and her husband, Luke, were supposed to spend their twentieth wedding anniversary together at the luxurious Resort at Broken Point in Big Sur, California. Where better to celebrate a marriage, a family, and a life together than at one of the most stunning places on earth?

But now she’s traveling solo.

To add insult to injury, there’s a wedding at Broken Point scheduled during her stay. Ellery remembers how it felt to be on the cusp of everything new and wonderful, with a loved and certain future glimmering just ahead. Now, she isn’t certain of anything except for her love for her kids and her growing realization that this place, though beautiful, is unsettling.

When Ellery discovers the body of the groom floating in the pool in the rain, she realizes that she is not the only one whose future is no longer guaranteed. Before the police can reach Broken Point, a mudslide takes out the road to the resort, leaving the guests trapped. When another guest dies, it’s clear something horrible is brewing.

Everyone at Broken Point has a secret. And everyone has a shadow. Including Ellery.

So so

Did not love or hate this book! It reminded me of a lifetime movie you can leave on in the background. Entertaining but not earth shattering

OK for a Summer Read / Not Very Mysterious

Easy, fast read, but not much substance. Nothing really compelling about any of the characters. It’s a good one to listen to while cleaning or gardening. It’s interesting that the author is known for her YA fiction writing, so I might give those books a try. This is her first adult fiction book that mirrors some events in the author’s life. A solid 3 stars for me.

A whole lot of okay

I can’t believe that this was a Reese Witherspoon book club pick. Her picks are usually good. I couldn’t wait for this one to end

Drags out

I loved the idea of the story line (Much like the beloved Agatha Christie novels we all love) but parts of this were difficult to follow. I, like reviews before, wanted this book to end long before the exhaustive ending.

I wouldn’t read this again but if you like mysteries and want to give it a go, just make sure you listen for the details or you can get lost in the parts that seem to fly through to the next scene.

There are twists in the story that seem super abrupt as if you are on a parallel path but if you pay attention the twists connect the story together like puzzle pieces.

Solid 3 for me. Not a total waste of time but the ending left me feeling “just ok”

Meh

Somewhat boring…. I usually love Reese Witherspoons picks but this was a bust for me. Seems to keep stringing you along with no real intensity of wanting to know who the actual killer is.

Juvenile

This book reads like it should be in the YA genre.
The limited vocabulary all the way through, the simple and predictable characters, it’s just incredibly basic.
I believed the positive reviews and went out of my comfort zone (which is almost always British or Scottish mystery, or the classics) and forced myself through it.
The bereaved wife separated from her kids thing becomes like a constant drum beat that I tired of very quickly.
She’s on vacation in Big Sur and grieving the loss of her marriage and the life she believed she would have, ok got it.
One doesn’t need to belabor that point chapter after chapter.
The protagonist is self obsessed, and the consistent victim stance that takes way too long to be challenged is just, well, exhausting.
There wasn’t anything particularly mysterious or creepy about this “mystery” either.
There is no atmosphere, shallow characters all the way through, and I just couldn’t relate to the main character at all due to the lack of depth.
It’s just my opinion but I really can’t get my head around why everyone thinks this book is so good.
To me it simply isn’t.
If you’re used to reading authors like Ruth Ware, Lucy Foley, Lisa Jewell, etc you will be sorely disappointed by this book.
Save your credit.

Too Long

Boring characters and slow moving story made this a DNF. Didn’t even care who the killer or killers was.

Not worth your time

Really had to force myself to finish this one. By the end, I could care less who the killer was.
