Publisher's summary

Paula Brackston transports listeners to the windswept mountains of Wales in this enthralling tale of love and magic.

In her small early-19th-century Welsh town, there is no one quite like Morgana. She is small and quick, and pretty enough to attract a suitor, but there are things that set her apart from other girls. Though her mind is sharp she has not spoken since she was a young girl. Her silence is a mystery, as well as her magic - the household objects that seem to move at her command, the bad luck that visits those who do her ill.

Concerned for her safety, her mother is anxious to see Morgana married, and Cai Jenkins, the widowed drover from the far hills who knows nothing of the rumors that swirl around her, seems the best choice. After her wedding, Morgana is heartbroken at leaving her mother, and wary of this man, whom she does not know, and who will take her away to begin a new life.

But she soon falls in love with Cai’s farm and the wild mountains that surround it. Here, where frail humans are at the mercy of the elements, she thrives, her wild nature and her magic blossoming. Cai works to understand the beautiful, half-tamed creature he has chosen for a bride, and slowly, he begins to win Morgana’s affections.

It’s not long, however, before her strangeness begins to be remarked upon in her new village. A dark force is at work there - a person who will stop at nothing to turn the townspeople against Morgana, even at the expense of those closest to her. Forced to defend her home, her man, and herself from all comers, Morgana must learn to harness her power, or she will lose everything in this beautifully written, enchanting novel.

Not as captivating as Witch's Daughter

This story was slow to start, and I wanted to shake the protagonist. Conversely, the conclusion came so abruptly that it was slightly unsatisfying. As for the narrator... I didn't feel there was much difference in her voicing of these characters.

A beautiful walk through woods, peril & true love

Although Morganna cannot be called an accomplished witch she absolutely rises to any occasion she is put in. The way the relationship grows and love deepens despite Morgannas "gifts" is well done and believable!

Good

I loved this book when I ready it. So I thought I would get the audio version as well. I still loved the book but it was a little hard to keep up with the narrator. I don't want to discourage anyone from reading it because it is still a great read, but just be aware of the need to pay a little closer attention.

The Winter Witch

Although I enjoyed the book, I would have to agree with a few of the other ratings that the book moved a little slow, and was a little frustrating with the inability of the characters to communicate more effectively.

A little wordy...

Again, it felt needlessly wordy. the last 3 chapters felt like she just kept saying in different ways that she must save Cai and that she was his only hope. I feel like it could have saved 2 hours off of the story time by not being so repetitive. There was a point when I thought I had paused the story and I hadn't and it took me forever to find my place because everytime I rewound the book she was essentially saying the same thing. It would have been a great read if it didn't feel so wordy and so repetitive with the language and ideas.

An intriguing Welsh tale

Unfamiliar with the Welsh language I believe the author and narrator were attempting to apply a Welsh dialect throughout the book, thus creating a wonderfully enchanting story.

Character flaws…

I wanted to enjoy this story and liked the narrator, but the main character… well, just bless her heart. She was sweet, but absolutely useless and very self centered. It made things ridiculously annoying and disappointing several times as the story unfolds.

Take you to another time!

What did you love best about The Winter Witch?

Winter Witch is a really fun listen. I really enjoy a story that takes you to another place, time and brings it to life. Paula Brackston does a very nice job of character development, creating tension in the story and then resolving things nicely, but I really love the world in which we watch this story unfold.

Thank you, Paula and Marisa. Nice work!
