Publisher's summary

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post bestseller.

In an unforgettable love story, a woman’s impossible journey through the ages could change everything....

Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time.

The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar. Mistaken for the boy’s long-missing mother, Anne adopts her identity, convinced the woman’s disappearance is connected to her own.

As tensions rise, Thomas joins the struggle for Ireland’s independence and Anne is drawn into the conflict beside him. Caught between history and her heart, she must decide whether she’s willing to let go of the life she knew for a love she never thought she’d find. But in the end, is the choice actually hers to make?

Amy Harmon can do no wrong

Oddly enough I just did another review where I cautioned that one should always read the blurb because I could have saved myself from a book I thoroughly disliked if I had done so. And here we go again with a book where I failed to read the blurb. What a different experience though! This was a wonderful book. To be honest, I think Amy Harmon has so much talent as an author that I would read or listen to anything she writes without ever knowing ahead of time what the story was about.

By total coincidence, I listened to this book on St. Patrick's Day. Having not read the blurb I had no idea that this book was set in Ireland and dealt with a lot of Irish history so that was a fun happenstance. I found a lot of the history fascinating and kept pausing the story to look up key figures and events and learn more about them. One of the things I appreciated most while listening to this was how Ms. Harmon humanized these historical figures. It can be easy to forget that famous or infamous people are still just people who laugh at jokes and dance at weddings and cry at the loss of friends. Altogether it was a lovely and moving story, told well.

The narration by Saskia Maarleveld and Will Damron was excellent. They absolutely added to my enjoyment of the book, particularly with their lovely accents.

Be transported

What the Wind Knows is a wonderful historic novel of Ireland during the Easter uprising and Irish independence. It is cleverly told through Ann and Thomas - the main characters and beautifully narrated by Saskia Maarleveld. The combination of a love story, time travel and history of Ireland make this an exceptional tale.

Loved this book

I really enjoyed this story. The performance was fantastic- Saskia has a very soothing voice and was just the right fit for the story. I loved the way the author drew in Irish history and captured the fire and wit of the Irish. I didn’t want it to end.
