Publisher's summary

Featuring a foreword recorded exclusively for Audible by Philippa Gregory and an interview with the author.

Philippa Gregory's first story in the best-selling Wideacre trilogy. A compelling tale of passion and intrigue set in the 18th century. From the author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin's Lover.

Wideacre Hall, set in the heart of the English countryside, is the ancestral home that Beatrice Lacey loves. But as a woman of the 18th century, she has no right of inheritance. Corrupted by a world that mistreats women, she sets out to corrupt others.

Sexual and willful, she believes that the only way to achieve control over Wideacre is through a series of horrible crimes, and no-one escapes the consequences of her need to possess the land.

Critic reviews

"The eighteenth-century woman is a neglected creature but, in the figure of her heroine, Philippa Gregory has defined a certain kind of wildness.... This is a novel written from instinct, not out of calculation, and it shows." (Peter Ackroyd, The Times)

Oh yes, so so good!

I was skeptical by the description, but this novel kept me in rapt attention. I had a hard time focusing on anything else wanting to know what was going to happen next!

Not What I Expected

The story is raw and disturbing. I love Philippa Gregory's Plantagonet and Tudor novels, but this story is entirely different. I grew to really dislike the main character. I disliked her so much that I could not finish thr book. The narrator did a great job, but I'm disappointed that I wasted a credit on this book.

Downton Abbey meets Flowers in the Attic

Not the typical Philippa Gregory. Complete fiction with little historical details other than time period. Lots of incestual sex scenes that I was not expecting....

An entertaining read

A Gothic bodice ripper. Lots of passion and bad behavior, but mixed with a sensitive handling of class issues during the time period.

Entirely too long.

I had some difficulty remaining engaged. A bit tragic. Someone deserves a happy ending.

starts lovely...

Starts light and lively , It soon turns into a sordid tale with obsession, incest and ruin. The business parts too are boring and tedious. I will not be listening to following books in the srries.

What an excellent read

This is a thriller with so many twists and turns. The main character is such a mesmerizing study in narcissism, that I couldn’t quit reading.

An Excellent Philippa Gregory Novel!

There are several reviews that rear back from the contents of this novel but a true Philippa Gregory fan wi not be shocked. She does not shy away from "taboo" topics but she writes them in a way that does not judge but simply allows the listener a different take. Not every main character in a novel is written for the audience to root for; sometimes we're supposed to root against them or simply take them in.The narrator, Emma Powell, is excellent! Her use of tone and accents help round out the story that Philippa Gregory has created. I truly enjoyed this novel and am looking forward to starting the second novel of this series!

A Family’s Story of the destruction of a grand estate

It was a very sad and depressing story. At times I wanted to turn it off but Hope of a redemption kept me listening. I did not like the story at all. A Spoiled, entitled daughter that should have been a boy and her soft brother that should have been a girl destroyed a beautiful Thriving Home and Land. A lot of killing that I didn’t have the stomach for. The story could have turned around and all the way to the end but instead left the reader wanting.
