Da Brancaleone, il paese sullo Ionio dove è confinato dall'agosto del '35 al marzo '36, Pavese scrive compulsivamente alla sorella per lenire la distanza e la solitudine. Anche in questo caso le lettere diventano occasioni letterarie per mimare i grandi autori classici (la grecità si affaccia dal dialogo fitto con il Mediterraneo calabrese) e usare la scrittura come specchio e guida. Da Brancaleone prende vita anche Il mestiere di vivere, il diario che diventa quasi uno spazio comunicativo alternativo a quello delle epistole, che anche qui trovano spazio, ricopiate o trascritte.

Dopo la felice soluzione del caso del bambino scomparso, il commissario Buonvino si gode la quiete ritrovata del parco di Villa Borghese e le gioie dell'amore. Ma è una tregua di breve durata. Il ritrovamento di un cadavere nel rettilario del Bioparco, il giardino zoologico della capitale ospitato all'interno della Villa, rappresenta una brutta gatta da pelare per Buonvino, che si dà il caso sia erpetofobico, provando un terrore atavico per qualsiasi tipo di rettile.
