Publisher's summary

From the author of Pack Up the Moon comes a funny, romantic, and deeply moving novel about the unexpected rewards that come from life’s detours.

Lark Smith has always had a plan for her life: find a fantastic guy, create a marriage as blissful as her parents’, pop out a couple of kids, and build a rewarding career as an oncologist.

Things aren’t going so well.

For one, the guy didn’t work out. Theoretically, she’d love to find someone else, but it hasn’t happened. Two, she’s just been transferred out of Oncology for being too emotional. (Is it her fault she’s a weeper?) Three, her parents just split up.

Deviating from the plan was … well, not in the plan. A potential solution comes from the foul-tempered and renowned surgeon Lorenzo Santini (aka Dr. Satan).

He needs a date this summer for his sister’s wedding. His ancient Noni wants to see him settled. In exchange, he could make a few introductions and maybe get Lark back into the field of her choice.

As a sucker for old people and fake relationships, Lark agrees. Teeny problem—she instantly falls for his big, warm family. Especially his estranged brother.

Meanwhile, Lark’s mom has moved in with Lark’s colorful landlady, Joy, and an unlikely friendship blossoms. The three women have a long summer and a big, beautiful house on the ocean to figure out what’s next … and quite possibly learn that the best things in life aren’t planned at all.

Another home run.

Bless this authors heart.
This book captures you, and takes you away with such enlightenment to strong characters you will not be able to put this book down. So much wet and humor at a rapid pace in the beginning and throughout the book with basic theme of a heart dealt dealing Dr, lessons of learning to be a human who is totally opposite of her, with backgrounds of cancer units, emergency room situations, hospice and palliative care Realities and gifts, and round table of family dynamics and friendships.
I pray that this author enjoys writing her books as much as we enjoy listening to and reading them. She can take us away from our daily struggles or problems we have no control over, and can elevate our mood and gives us hope and compassion for humanity. I've always loved Exie Sams narration, and this book is well worth the credit and wait. All I can say is thank you to help take my mind off situation that are going on now, can't wait to start listening to it again. I am 67 though I feel I'm easily in the 20s so wish I would've had this attitude when I was younger, but life is good, I just pray I can help others and animals that are less fortunate than myself❤️

Love Love Love

My favorite Author and by FAR my favorite Narrator. I’ll listen to anything she narrates. The characters were so well written as completely different women. The writing was almost three different stories that came together perfectly. Great job Higgins

I really liked Lark. I was rooting for her.

I always enjoy Kristan Higgins’ books. You can relate to her characters as they stumble their way along, making mistakes and having embarrassing moments, meaning well, taking a few wrong turns as they find their path. Lark is so obviously a caring person who undervalues herself and is driven by other people’s opinions. It is heartening to watch her find her strength.

Great characters and story

I love the characters, they engage you from the beginning. It’s great that they have substance to them. Learned much about cancer and what patients go through. The stories in this book were wonderful. I love the author and this just may be one of her top three best.

Love…Loss…Love

I love Kristan Higgins and Xe Sands is a wonderful narrator. The story was beautiful and characters relatable. Finished in three days. However, I felt it was so sad for so long and the happy ending to quickly wrapped up. The wedding could have been a hilarious opportunity.

Lorenzo!

I have to know what happens to Lorenzo!!! Love this book. I laughed, I cried, I snorted…my heart was heavy. A great listen, made my ears weep at times for both the sorrow and pure joy of resounding love and devotion. *Sigh*
